The Penina Hotel, one of the first international golf resort hotels on the Algarve, is a five-star venue. After the meeting had closed and the Lodge furniture stored away, we made our way up to the bar. There we were joined by our wives and partners – about 100 in total – the gentlemen in their tuxedos and Ladies in ballgowns. It was a strange sight because there were also present golfers dressed in their bright shirts and shorts.
An American next to me at the bar turned and said ”Hey what are you, a waiters convention?” with a mocking attitude!
I replied, “No, we are the Hole in One Club” and thought that was it – but he then said “I’ve heard of you guys, tell me more”. Thinking fast, I continued “Firstly you must hit a hole one, then you contact the Club Secretary (and I pointed towards Ken Warren – then the Lodge Secretary). He then contacts all of the membership, and we fly into the country and hold a dinner/dance, like tonight. You will bear the cost of the whole event including travel, accommodation and the celebration ball”. I thought that would be it, but then he asked, “Who is your new member?” Well, I pointed to Ron Whiting (the First Master) resplendent in a white dinner jacket. Still enquiring, the American asked “Which hole?” Now I was really put on the spot, so I replied, “The fifth”. “Holy Moses, that’s a par five” he exclaimed. I looked him squarely in the eyes and replied – “One hell of a shot!” smiled and re-joined the party.
We then retired to a fantastic dinner and speeches, with Ron Whiting during his speech telling everyone that the talk of the bar was of the Hole in one Club. This was met with much laughter and applause. He then turned to me and raised his glass.
