Become a Freemason

Group of men joining

Freemasonry as you will discover is a wonderful organisation that has many benefits – first however you must start the application process and so this Quick Start guide is intended to help you on your way. The procedure is very simple and consists of 9 easy steps. Please note that you can use the online form below to make further enquiries.

Data Protection Information

As a candidate, you consent to the processing, retention and sharing of your personal data submitted on or with your application, including details of criminal convictions if applicable, for the purpose of assessing your membership application and any other membership applications you may make to Masonic entities.

The assessment of your application will include printing some of your personal details on the summons which is sent to all the members of the Lodge to which you are applying. Those details are your full name, age, profession or occupation (if any), place or places of abode, business address or addresses and names of your proposer and seconder.

You can withdraw your consent and request erasure of your application data at any time prior to your initiation, exaltation, joining or re-joining by notifying your proposer and seconder that you wish to cancel your application.

Step One: Contact us

The first thing to do is to let us know that you’re interested in joining and you can do this by entering your details on the form below. Please note that making an application neither compels you to join nor does it guarantee entry. This is merely your first step on a Masonic journey of discovery.

Step Two: Initial Discussion

If your initial form is OK, someone will make contact with you for an initial discussion and informal meeting. This will give you the opportunity to discuss Freemasonry and its benefits to you as well as the costs and commitments involved.

Step Three: Choosing a Lodge

After inviting you to meet informally and getting to know you for a while, the local membership team help you choose the most suitable Lodge for you and to make the necessary arrangements for your introduction.

Step Four: Lodge Introduction

Having been introduced to a Lodge, you and your Partner will then be invited to a meeting with the Lodge Representatives. They will explain the joining procedure further and to clarify the obligations of membership in terms of fees and attendance. The meeting will also provide an opportunity for you and your Partner to clarify any outstanding issues or questions you may have.

Step Five – Application Form

Filling in the application form is simple and made easier by the assistance of the Lodge Representative who will be on hand to provide advice and support throughout the joining procedure and beyond whenever required.

Step Six: The Interview

You will then be requested to attend an interview chaired by senior members of the Lodge. Don’t be worried as the members of the panel only want to find out more about you and your reasons for joining. The meeting will conducted with care and consideration by experienced Freemasons – some of whom you may know already – who have all undergone the same process.

Step Seven: The Proposal

Your application to join is now gathering momentum and so the next thing that will happen is a Lodge member will formally propose you as an Initiate at the next Lodge Meeting. This tradition ensures that all the members are informed of your application to be a Freemason and is no different to the procedure one would undergo when joining any other institution.

Step Eight: The Ballot

The members will next give their assent to your application by way of a traditional ballot. This may seem slightly outdated and very formal but it is traditions such as this that make membership of Freemasonry such an interesting experience. You will then be advised of the date of your Initiation and how to prepare yourself for it.

Step Nine: Your Initiation

The night you are Initiated is very special and you will treasure the memory of this totally unforgettable and very enjoyable evening. Do not worry – you won’t be asked to do or say anything that is contrary to your civil, moral or religious duties.
