What a fantastic afternoon we enjoyed at the Lodge of Discoveries’ Annual Christmas Dinner here in the Algarve. Members from all four lodges within the Group of Lodges in Portugal were in attendance, including the Grand Inspector and his lovely wife, Bryony, making it a truly special and well-supported occasion.
The Grand inspector took his time to speak to all guests individually throughout the afternoon and evening which was very special.
We gathered at 1pm to enjoy a wonderful three-course Christmas lunch, with food and drink flowing freely throughout the afternoon and plenty of laughter around the room. By around 5:30–6pm, the event was officially drawing to a close—although clearly no one had any intention of leaving. The celebrations naturally continued in the bar and eventually evolved into what can only be described as a true Masonic after-party at a local restaurant.
A special mention must go to Rui Calado, Worshipful Master of Lodge of Discoveries nº 9409, and his very supported wife Cristina who very generously presented every guest with a beautifully wrapped commemorative mug, complete with a festive red bow and a bag of Santa chocolates. This thoughtful gesture went down extremely well with all the guests, especially the ladies, as can be seen in the photographs.
The afternoon was held in support of a most worthy cause: the Worshipful Master’s Charity, Constança, who lives with a rare genetic condition. All proceeds from the raffle were donated to the Master’s Fund, with the raffle table overflowing with wonderful prizes including chocolates, wines and many other items. The standout first prize — a night’s stay for two with breakfast at any Tivoli Hotel, generously donated by the Tivoli — was the first to be claimed. Thanks to the generosity of those attending, the raffle raised over €510 on the day.
As always, the Secretary of the Lodge of Discoveries added his personal touch by preparing individual place-setting cards for every guest, presented to his usual exceptionally high standard and ensuring everyone felt warmly welcomed. We were also delighted to welcome the Food and Beverage Manager of the Tivoli Hotel, who joined the Secretary at his table for lunch, further enhancing the convivial atmosphere.
Several speeches were given throughout the afternoon, and the event concluded with the Worshipful Master, Rui Calado, delivering heartfelt thanks to all guests and visitors for their contributions—not only to his charity but also to making the Christmas lunch such a resounding success. He finished by wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, marking a warm and joyful close to the festivities.
Throughout the day and evening, the friendship, camaraderie, and generosity on display were evident to all. The generosity shown truly reflected the very best of Freemasonry and made this celebration one to remember. An enjoyable afternoon and evening was had by all, and we are already very much looking forward to next year.
Message from the Worshipful Master, Brother Rui Calado
Dear Brethren,
I wish to express my joy and heartfelt gratitude for the wonderful Christmas lunch and gathering we shared yesterday. It was a truly special moment, a source of pride for all of us and, in particular, for each Brother of our Lodge of Discoveries, nº 9409.
Your generosity towards Constança, our chosen charity this year, was extraordinary: all the prepared raffle tickets were sold, generating a contribution of €510. A gesture that honours the spirit of the season and the values that define us.
Thank you all! It is a great pride and a privilege to serve as your Worshipful Master.
Let us continue this path together, always side by side, leaving no one behind. I would be delighted to see you at our Meetings next year. In January, we will have another Initiation — a ceremony that no Mason should miss. Welcoming a new member into our Lodge is a unique and deeply symbolic moment. We count on you, My Dear Brother, just as you may count on us whenever you need.
Once again, I express my sincere thanks.
Thank you all for your presence, your generosity, and your dedication to our Lodge.
May this moment strengthen our bonds; may Christmas bring warmth to your homes; and may the New Year find us united in purpose.
A Holy and Merry Christmas to you all.
Thank you.
Yours sincerely and fraternally,
Rui Calado
Note
In addition to the proceeds of €510 from the raffle, we also received a donation of €50 from a visitor to our Lodge and we will receive another donation from a friend that couldn’t attend the dinner.
