On behalf of our late Brother Phil Egginton (✟), Past Worshipful Master of Lodge of Discoveries nº 9409, a cheque for €850 was presented to Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lagos, representing part of the funds raised for charity during Phil’s year as Worshipful Master.
The donation was formally received by Pedro Cruz, Provedor of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lagos, in recognition and support of the outstanding charitable and social work carried out by this historic institution within our local community.
This donation also serves as a fitting tribute to Phil Egginton, reflecting his commitment to charity, fraternity and service to others.
The Misericórdia of Lagos is one of the oldest charitable institutions of its kind in Portugal. Its foundation predates 1501, the year of the earliest known document relating to the Brotherhood, bearing witness to more than five centuries of solidarity, service and commitment to the people of Lagos.
The Misericórdias originated as brotherhoods established for the practice of charity through the Works of Mercy, founded upon principles of mutual support and governed by a “Compromisso” — a formal charter setting out their values, duties and organisation.
It is therefore particularly meaningful for the Lodge of Discoveries nº9409 to support an institution with such a long and distinguished history of service to others.
This donation represents more than a financial contribution. It expresses our recognition and appreciation of the remarkable work carried out by Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lagos and reflects values that we deeply share:

- Service to the community.
For us, helping those who help others is itself a way of serving.
